2008 Aflac All American Game Notes |
|
|
East Wins Again
The East team once again came back, this time at Dodger Stadium, in the final inning
to grab a 4-2 win in the sixth annual Aflac All American Game. The game was very
similar to last year’s come back win by the East when Tim Beckham (future #1 overall
draft pick) drove in the winning runs in the 9th inning in San Diego. This year
the West team pitching dominated the game through 8 innings and entered the ninth
with what seemed like a safe 2-0 lead. The East had managed only one hit in the
first 8 innings, a single by Brian Goodwin (NC).
Tough lefty Slade Heathcott (TX) had driven in the first run of the game with a
line drive single in the first and then came in to pitch the ninth for the save
and possible MVP award. After all, Heathcott would have recorded the game winning
hit as well as the save. However, this is baseball and baseball is a funny game!

2008 Area Code Games |
|
|
The Area Code Games, seemingly more than any other similar
event in this realm of baseball, always has large contingent of players with connections
to professional baseball.
Sometimes it’s hard to tell with many players if you haven’t talked to someone who
actually knows for sure. Everyone is pretty sure that Tony Piazza (Scottsdale, AZ)
is no relation to Mike. 6-7 RHP Tom Lemke (Phoenix, AZ) is most definitely not a
relation to the former diminutive Braves second baseman Mark Lemke.

Class of 2009 |
The annual Tournament of Stars took place at the USA Baseball national training
center in Cary, N.C., from June 17-22, and attracted many of the top prospects in
the 2009 high school class. It came right on the heels of the Perfect Game National

players attended both events.
Officially, the Tournament of Stars served as a tryout for the U.S. junior national
team that will participate in the World Junior Championship in Edmonton from July
25-Aug. 3. A total of 34 players, plus 13 alternates, were selected to participate
in the national team trials in Phoenix from July 10-17. |
