TOP 50 JUNIOR-COLLEGE TEAMS, 2009
23. Manatee (Fla.)
2008 Record: 40-16.
Team Capsule: Not only do the Lancers return the state’s reigning home-run
king in 1B Jonathan Griffin (.340-22-74) and hard-hitting Old Dominion-bound 3B
Jonathan Rodriguez (.325-8-46), but they’ve inherited two more prolific power sources
in OFs Kelvin Clark and Tony Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va., CC), two JC transfers who
also add a speed dimension to the lineup. Freshman SS Taylor Wrenn, a 2008 draft
pick and a sound defender, will solidify the middle infield. The pitching staff
may be more problematical; holdover Dustin Leonard (3-1, 4.20) slots in as the No.
1 starter.
