TOP 50 JUNIOR-COLLEGE TEAMS, 2009

23. Manatee (Fla.)

2008 Record:
40-16.

Team Capsule:
Not only do the Lancers return the state’s reigning home-run king in 1B Jonathan Griffin (.340-22-74) and hard-hitting Old Dominion-bound 3B Jonathan Rodriguez (.325-8-46), but they’ve inherited two more prolific power sources in OFs Kelvin Clark and Tony Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va., CC), two JC transfers who also add a speed dimension to the lineup. Freshman SS Taylor Wrenn, a 2008 draft pick and a sound defender, will solidify the middle infield. The pitching staff may be more problematical; holdover Dustin Leonard (3-1, 4.20) slots in as the No. 1 starter.

Top Prospect:
Kelvin Clark , of.
Clark hit .340 with 14 homers while flashing 6.8 speed as a freshman at Lake City (Fla.) CC, before the school abruptly abandoned its athletic program. He’ll slot into center field this spring for the Lancers, and work on achieving better discipline at the plate.

Players, PG Crosschecker Top 250 Prospects:
No. 29 Kelvin Clark , of; No. 77 Jonathan Griffin, 1b; No. 158 Taylor Wrenn, ss.

Opening Game, 2009:
Jan. 30 at No. 41 Palm Beach CC.
