DRAFT 2006
ORDER OF SELECTION
Royals to lead off this year’s draft
The Kansas City Royals have the
distinction of drafting first overall in the 2006 draft for the first time in
draft history, a factor of their finishing with the poorest record in the major
leagues a year ago while simultaneously losing the most games (106) in club
history. A year ago, the Royals picked second, their previous high to that
point, after losing 104 times in 2004.
Teams draft in reverse order of their
previous year’s finish—regardless of league. The Colorado Rockies, Tampa Bay
Devil Rays and Pittsburgh Pirates all finished with identical 67-95 (.414)
records in 2005, but the Rockies will choose second because they had the
earlier selection (seventh) among the three teams in last year’s draft. The
Devil Rays pick third, while the Pirates will follow with the fourth pick. This
year’s draft is scheduled for June 6-7, with approximately 1,500 players
expected to be selected.
The order in the second half of the
first round (picks 16-30) and in succeeding rounds has been adjusted for Type A
and Type B free-agent signings, with the club that lost a ranked free agent
gaining a draft pick as compensation. Teams that lost a Type A free agent will
be further compensated with a supplemental pick between the first and second
rounds. There will be 14 such selections this year, compared with 18 in 2005.
The Washington Nationals will benefit
from the loss of Type B free agents Hector Carrasco (Angels) and Esteban Loaiza
(Athletics) by gaining those teams’ picks in the first round, giving them three
in all. The Atlanta Braves, with two supplemental picks and two extra
second-round picks, will also gain extra picks in this year’s draft.
The Chicago Cubs, meanwhile, will
forfeit their second-, third- and fourth-round picks after signing free agents
Bobby Howry, Scott Eyre and Jacque Jones.
