Miami held on to the top spot in the PG Crosschecker Top
50 college rankings for the fourth straight week after sweeping No. 42 Virginia
(32-15, 13-11) in a three-game series over the weekend. The Hurricanes (36-5, 20-2)
are known for their potent offense, but the pitching came through as they allowed
four runs over the three games. Freshman lefthander Chris Hernandez (8 IP,
2 H, 1 BB, 11 K) was outstanding on Friday night, leading the Hurricanes to a 1-0
victory.
The biggest ACC series this weekend saw No. 2-ranked North
Carolina (38-8, 18-5) take two of three games from No. 5 Florida State. (35-7, 19-5)
With a 3-0 lead going to the bottom of the eighth in the opener on Friday night,
North Carolina’s offense suddenly came to life in a huge way, putting up 11 runs
en route an 11-4 victory.
Junior righthander Elih Villanueva (9 IP, 2 H, 2
ER) threw a gem for the Seminoles on Sunday, but ended up being the hard-luck loser
in a 2-1 Tar Heels victory. Sophomore second baseman Kyle Seager (.387-8-63)
was crucial for UNC in the comeback win as he drove in the tying run in the seventh
inning and stroked a double in the 10th. Florida State has now dropped its last
two series and will look to get back on track against struggling Clemson next weekend.
Third-ranked Arizona State (35-7, 10-5) hammered No. 21
California (27-13-2, 7-8) over the weekend, putting up 40 runs over three games.

the only school not to drop a series this year. The Cardinal took two of three games
from USC, highlighted by a 4-0 victory on Friday night with junior righthander Austin

weekends and have a favorable schedule coming down the stretch. Arizona saw its
13 game winning streak come to a close, losing the final two games of the series
by one run.
The race for the Big 12 Conference title is starting to
shape up as a three-horse race with No. 4 Texas A&M (33-7, 15-3), No. 6 Oklahoma
State (32-11, 14-7) and No. 7 Nebraska (32-8-1, 15-5-1) leading the charge. Oklahoma

K), a favorite to be the first college pitcher drafted in June, had another strong
outing in leading San Diego to an 11-4 victory over Loyola Marymount.
Along with Matusz (9-1, 1.59), another pitcher that plays
his college ball in San Diego and might be a leading candidate for national player
of the year honors is sophomore righthander Stephen Strasburg (6-1, 1.63).
He was dominant again on Friday, leading the Aztecs to a 4-1 victory over TCU. Strasburg
went the distance, allowing only one hit and one earned run, while striking 13 and
