COLLEGE BASEBALL 2008
Weekly Wrap-Up
March 24, 2008

By Jeff Simpson

Arizona State held on to the top spot in Perfect Game Crosschecker’s top 50 college rankings for the second straight week, despite losing its first game of the season—6-3 to unranked Northern Colorado in a mid-week game.

The Sun Devils (22-1) sandwiched that loss, however, between two impressive wins against No. 8 Arizona and red-hot UC Irvine, which moved up to No. 14. ASU’s offense continues to roll behind junior third baseman Brett Wallace (.420-9-31) and junior first baseman Ike Davis (.444-8-35), both potential first-round picks in June.

A trio of Atlantic Coast Conference schools sits at two, three and five in this week’s rankings. Second-ranked Miami (17-2, 7-1) might be the only team in the country that has the offensive talent to match Arizona State’s potent offense. The recent return of junior outfielder Dennis Raben, a potential first-rounder who missed the early portion of the season with a back injury, boosts an offense that had already been manhandling opposing pitching staffs. The Hurricanes have averaged more than 11 runs a game in ACC play and dropped 40 runs in two games against Wake Forest this weekend. A third game was rained out with Miami leading 9-1 in the fourth inning.

Florida State (19-2) moved to No. 3 while North Carolina (18-4) held steady at No. 5.

Sixth-ranked Missouri (18-2) might have the most talented weekend rotation in the country and swept Baylor by a combined 22-2 in a three-game Big 12 Conference series over the weekend. Junior righthanders Aaron Crow (5-0, 1.03) and Ian Berger (3-0, 0.30), and sophomore righthander Kyle Gibson (5-0, 1.83) have dominated all year, while freshman righthander Nick Tepesch (1.04, 3 SV) has anchored the bullpen.

Southeastern Conference play has been in full swing for two weeks with several teams looking strong in the early going. No. 17 Georgia (12-8, 4-2), which has played one of the toughest schedules in the country to date, won another impressive series over No. 44 Tennessee. The Bulldogs have been led by an early favorite for national player of the year in junior shortstop Gordon Beckham, who is hitting .517 with 13 home runs and 32 RBIs on the year.

Fast-charging Florida (17-4, 5-1) had another big week, beating No. 20 Mississippi two out of three in a weekend series as well as Florida State in a mid-week matchup. Freshman righthander Tommy Toledo (4-0, 1.93), an unsigned third-round draft pick, had yet another strong outing for the No. 24 Gators. He went seven innings, allowing only one run in a 10-2 route of Mississippi on Sunday.

No. 19 Kentucky saw its national-best winning streak of 19 in a row come to an end after dropping two of three games to No. 48 Auburn over the weekend. Auburn has been one of the most up-and-down teams in the country after being swept by Florida the previous weekend and swept in a four-game series against Florida State earlier in the year.

UNC Wilmington, Southern California, Auburn, Elon and West Virginia all entered the top 50 after the fifth weekend of play. UNC Wilmington (17-4, 9-0 in the Colonial) continued to roll through the CAA after a weekend sweep of William & Mary. One weekend after being swept by Long Beach State, USC rebounded to take a weekend series 2-1 over then No. 2-ranked Arizona. Wake Forest, Oklahoma, James Madison, Duke and William & Mary all fell out of the rankings.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mike McKenna, of, Florida Atlantic. McKenna had a monster week for Florida Atlantic, going 12-for-22 (.545) with seven home runs and 19 RBIs. He led the Owls to a perfect 6-0 record on the week, including a three home-run game against Middle Tennessee State. For the year, McKenna is hitting .434-13-43.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Graham Stoneburner; rhp, Clemson. After sitting out the 2007 season with a torn ACL, Stoneburner has turned into Clemson’s most reliable starter at the beginning of the 2008 season. On Sunday, the red-shirt freshman had an outstanding outing against North Carolina State, throwing a complete-game, two-hit shutout, while striking out seven and walking one. The Richmond, Va., product improved to 4-0 on the year with a 2.70 ERA.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Long Beach State. If you were to throw out preseason rankings, it would be difficult to rank anyone ahead of surging Long Beach State (16-3) at this point in the season. This past week, the Dirtbags, ranked No. 20 at the start of the season, swept then No. 14-ranked UCLA and took a mid-week game over then No. 37-ranked San Diego State. In the first five weekends of play this season, the No. 4 Dirtbags have won weekend series over UCLA, USC, Hawaii, Wichita State and Rice—all nationally-ranked teams. Long Beach State is now 12-2 against teams ranked in this week’s Top 50. As usual, pitching is a strong point for the Dirtbags who sport a team ERA of 2.02.
