COLLEGE BASEBALL 2008
Weekly Wrap-Up
March 10, 2008
By Jeff Simpson
The third week of the college baseball season was fairly uneventful in terms of
marquee matchups, so most teams held their own in the PG Crosschecker weekly
top 50 ranking. The top four teams remained the same with Arizona and Arizona
State holding on to the top two spots.
No. 1 Arizona (10-1) dominated the competition at the Whataburger College
Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Wildcats tossed three straight shutouts
and combined to outscore their openents 37-0 over the weekend.
No. 2 Arizona State has arguably the nation’s most prolific offense and it
showed again this past week as they dismantled Massachusetts and New Mexico
with ease. The Sun Devils (12-0) averaged more than 14 runs per game and never
scored less than 10 runs in any game. They are now averaging 11.5 runs per game
on the season.
The Atlantic Coast Conference was the first major conference to begin conference
play and the marquee series of the weekend pitted No. 34 North Carolina State
against No. 20 Virginia. The Wolfpack took two of three games from Virginia,
marking the sixth year in a row that State had won their series from the
Cavaliers. North Carolina had a big weekend against rival Duke, beating the
Blue Devils in basketball on Saturday night to win the ACC regular-season title
and taking two of three games from the Blue Devils to open the ACC baseball
season.
Three teams dropped out of the Top 10 this week. No. 11 Texas dropped its second
straight weekend series, falling to Stanford 2-1. No. 12 Mississippi also
dropped two games to TCU. No. 14 UCLA dropped two straight mid-week games to
Cal State Fullerton.
East Carolina and Santa Clara both entered the rankings this week. East Carolina
rattled off five straight wins on the week, including wins over Michigan and
Old Dominion. Playing one of the nation’s toughest schedules so far, Santa
Clara had another big week, defeating San Diego, San Diego State and Fresno
State. Cal Poly and Mississippi State both fell out of the Top 50 for the first
time. Mississippi State had a rough week, getting swept at home by Baylor.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Aaron Murphree, 1b, Arkansas. The senior first
baseman had one of the best offensive weeks in Arkansas history. Murphree went
11-for-24 (.524) and launched eight home runs. He also had 15 RBIs and 13 runs
scored. He has homered in a school-record six straight games and is now hitting
.447-12-28 with an improbable slugging percentage of 1.298.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Preston Guilmet, rhp, Arizona. The junior
righthander looks to be back in his 2007 form after an outstanding performance
in an 18-0 rout of South Alabama on Friday. Guilmet tossed eight shutout
innings, allowing four hits while walking none and striking out 12. For the
year, Guilmet is 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA.
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Cal State Fullerton. A week after being swept at
Stanford, the Titans turned things around in a big way with a weekend sweep of
Southern Mississippi after registering two wins over UCLA in a mid-week series.
Freshman righthander Daniel Renken (3-0, 1.76) earned Big West Conference
pitcher of the week honors after shutting down UCLA on Wednesday and picking up
a win in relief against Southern Miss on Sunday. Against the Bruins, Renken
threw seven innings, allowing three hits while walking one and striking out 10.
