PGCROSSCHECKER COLLEGE TEAM SCOUTING REPORT

90. OLD DOMINION (39-17, did not qualify for NCAA post-season play).

Conference/Projected Finish: Colonial/3rd (21-9, 2nd in 2006).

Coach: Jerry Meyers (61-50, 2 years).

First Game: Feb. 9 vs. Maryland-Eastern Shore .

OVERVIEW: The Monarchs made a quantum leap forward in Jerry Meyers’ second year as coach, improving from 22 wins in 2005 to 39 in 2006, but failed to make the NCAA tournament for the sixth straight year because of a late-season fade. Their leading hitter, top power man, winningest pitcher and saves leader have all departed, but they return promising sophomore RHPs Daniel Hudson (7-3, 3.28) and Anthony Shawler (2-0, 3.42), along with senior 1B Bryan Cipolla (.318-4-46), and senior OFs Jimmy Miles (.348-4-32) and Mike Zahm (.328-6-43).

TOP PROSPECT/SOPHOMORE: Dan Hudson, rhp. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Hudson , a possible first-round pick in 2008, becomes the ace of the staff this season after being used at the back of the rotation a year ago. He should ease into the role as he is very advanced in his development. He’s got a smooth, fluid delivery and good command of three pitches: a low 90s fastball, curve and change.

TOP FRESHMAN: Jake McAloose, 3b. TOP JUNIOR: Chris Keenan, 2b. TOP SENIOR: Jimmy Miles, of.
