PGCROSSCHECKER COLLEGE TEAM SCOUTING REPORT
16.
MISSISSIPPI
(44-22, lost in NCAA super-regionals).
Conference/Projected Finish: Southeastern/4th (17-13, 5th in 2006; won conference post-saeson tournament).
Coach: Mike Bianco (242-132, 6 years).
First Game: Feb. 10 vs.
New Orleans
.
OVERVIEW: Ole Miss narrowly missed making its first trip to the College World Series in more than 30 years the last two seasons. Junior 2B Justin Henry (.332-1-30) and junior SS Craig Cozart (.338-10-64) were key players on those teams, and will form a formidable double-play combination again. Three other regulars return, along with the five busiest arms on the pitching staff—led by sophomore LHP Brett Bukvich (6-6, 4.50) and sophomore RHP Lance Lynn (7-3, 4.96), who made 31 starts between them as freshmen.
X-Factor: The pitching staff has the potential for a trio of first- or second-round picks in the next two drafts, but junior RHP Will Kline (5-2, 3.71), Lynn and sophomore Cody Satterwhite (11-2, 2.00) must all pitch to those expectations this season on a more consistent basis.
TOP FRESHMAN: Andrew Clark, 1b.
Clark
, an 18th-round pick last June, is cut from the same mould as his namesake, Will Clark. He has the same sweet, powerful swing and should add an impact bat to the middle of the Ole Miss lineup.
TOP SOPHOMORE: Lance Lynn, rhp, and Cody Satterwhite, rhp. With 92-95 mph fastballs, Lynn and Satterwhite have electric arms. But they walked 85 and struck out only 122 in a combined 148 innings last year, and will need to improve on those ratios.
TOP JUNIOR: Zack Cozart, ss. Cozart is an exceptional defender, probably the best defensive shortstop in college baseball. He established himself as the starting shortstop last summer for Team
USA
on a roster that included five elite college shortstops. He hit just .224-1-11 with wood for Team
USA
, however, a sharp drop from his sophomore year at Ole Miss.
TOP SENIOR: C.J. Ketchum, dh. The Rebels have only two seniors on the roster. Ketchum (.337-2-36) will be the DH, moving from first base to make room for
Clark
.
